Unrecognized Groups Overview

The Student Organization Handbook defines a student organization as a group of currently enrolled University of South Florida students who unite to promote a common interest. The University of South Florida requires all general fraternities and sororities to be affiliated with a governing council under the umbrella of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and with a larger, nationally-based organization who provide additional supervision, guidance, and programming on a wide variety of topics. Unauthorized expansion activities such as “campus crashing”, “ghost lines”, recruiting or soliciting membership, pre-initiation activities, pledging, educating and/or initiating USF students without having approved recognition through the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life will not be allowed.  Additionally, any potential chapter (otherwise known as a colony) and/or chapter operating at the University of South Florida must be working toward or have a charter that designates it as a chapter at USF-Tampa. City-wide/metro chapters are not permitted at USF.

The following organizations have interest groups that are registered as student organizations but do not have permission to act or conduct business as a fraternity/sorority:

  • Interested Women of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Pi
  • Evolution (Interested Men of Beta Chi Theta)
  • Kaptivation (Interested Women of Kappa Phi Gamma)
  • Venus (Interested Women of Kappa Phi Lambda)

The following organization(s) have either conducted unauthorized expansion activities previously or the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life has reason to believe that they may be continuing activity without approved recognition through the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and the University of South Florida. As such, students and families should be aware that involvement with these entities at the University of South Florida is not allowed and will be addressed in accordance with our policies:

  • Lambda Sigma Upsilon

Some organizations may portray themselves as registered student organizations. Please note that the following fraternities and sororities are not considered registered student organizations at this time:

  • Beta Theta Pi
  • Chi Phi Sigma
  • Lambda Chi Alpha
  • Omega Psi Phi
  • Phi Delta Theta
  • Sigma Sigma Rho
  • Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Please note that students affiliating with an unregistered student organization will be held individually responsible for actions stemming from membership in the organization. Students who join organizations that have no affiliation with the University and/or a national organization are not provided liability insurance or direct advisor support and are more likely to fall victim to academic, judicial, legal, or other problems while involved.
